H P Pollard
Mr Pollard
lived in Crowtrees Park, Rawdon (off the Rawdon
traffic lights) … he married a Rawdon girl and had 4 children (Keith and Joy
both were at AGS before us). In Alan Dobson’s “history” he is credited with a
lot of musical entertainments in the earlier days. In our time, apart from
maths, he managed the stage lighting and founded the Radio Club.

- I recall a remark of great
significance … when teaching us about binary (base 2) arithmetic, he noted
that that was what computers used; at that time, computers existed only in
research labs (university and military). He went on to remark that “one
day, there will be one in every home”. This was about 1959-60 … in the
1980’s I was working in the computer industry, and even then most people
in the industry could not imagine that coming to happen. Now in 2022 there’s
a computer in every phone. [Bernard]
- He and his family (and many of his
wife’s relatives) were members of Cragg Baptist church, Rawdon, where my
father was minister; he occasionally played the organ, but in the winter
months when to save heat we met in the schoolroom, he regularly played the
piano for services. He was very fond of Beethoven piano sonatas before the
services. [Bernard]
- More to come
