Romeo and Juliet tells the story of two young lovers

who perish because of a bitter, unreasoning feud

between the Montagues and Capulets, rival families

in Verona. Friar Laurence marries the lovers secretly,

hoping that the marriage will heal the feud.

Tybalt in senseless hatred, forces Romeo to a duel and

is killed. Romeo is banished. Capulet, Juliet's father,

arranges to marry her to County Paris. The rest of

the play tells of Juliet's desperate measures to avoid

this, of the deaths of Romeo and Juliet and of the

reconciliation of the two families.

PRESENTATION OF SHAKESPEARE TRAGEDY BY AIREBOROUCH G.S. PUPILS

A polished and well-rehearsed production of one of Shakespeare's better-known tragedies, "Romeo and Juliet," was given by pupils of Aireborough Grammar School in the School Hall on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, before appreciative audiences.

The well-known story of two young lovers' attempts to overcome the hatred between their respective families was well sustained by the very large cast. Lines were not only well learned but were delivered with attack and vitality, a tribute not only to the players but to the hard-working producer, Mrs. M. L. Curry.

Considerable acting-ability was revealed in some of the more lengthy parts, and although at times handicapped by the unavoidable smallness of the stage, this did not detract to any great extent the enjoyment of the play, in which the lighting effects and stage settings were of the highest order.

Worthy of special mention were lan Shaw in the difficult and lengthy part of Romeo; Russell Peakman and John Ross in their portrayals of Mercutio and Benvolio, friends of Romeo; Robert Bashforth as Juliet's nurse; Peter Buckley as Capulet; Brian Brockleburst as Tybalt; and Malcolm Laughton as Friar Laurence.

Certain parts were duplicated, including those of Lady Capulet and Juliet, played on alternate evenings by Margaret Atkinson and Norma Baron (Lady Capulet) and Jean Roberts and Hazel Lord (Juliet).

Other parts were played by lan Robinson, Robert Walker, Peter Turner, Philip Sutcliffe, Peter Tunstall, Keith Brayshaw, Stephen Crossley, Michael Towers, Bernard Harris, Neil Smith, Roy Huntley, Brian Leng and Margaret Fawcett.

Taking part in the lesser roles as citizens, guards and watchmen were Trevor Bradbourne, James Innes, Peter Robinson, John Mills, David Langley, Michael Mason, John Credland, David Overend, John Lawson, Michael Rhodes, Peter Clay, Margaret Hayes, Brenda Wiggins, Lalage Dain, Valerie Crowe and Mavis Pullan.

The fights were arranged my Miss A. Dean and the pianist was Eileen Smith, while Mrs. E. Mackay arranged the dance at the Capulet ball and the music of the play.

Others behind the scenes were Mr. A. E. B. Brown (stage manager), Mr. H. P. Pollard (lighting) assisted by Peter Denbigh; Mr. A. E. B. Brown, Mr. C. S. Northin, assisted by members of the Arts Club (stage settings); Mr. G. R. C. Robinson, Mr. W. Senior, Mr. G. P.

White and Miss J. M. Robinson (make-up).

Responsible for the costumes were Mrs. M. L. Curry, Miss D. Atkinson, assisted by Miss M. Horberry (Leeds College of Art), Margaret Kendall, Jean Dewhirst, Eileen Hardwick, Jean Musgrave, Marjorie Emsley, Gwyneth Mason, Elizabeth Leech, Katharine Wilson, Carol Jones, Maureen Clark and members of the art department.

Mr. E. Tillotson was the business manager.

At the close of the Thursday evening performance, the headmaster, Mr. J. Macdonald, said the cast Included pupils from nearly all the classes, many of whom were taking part In their first play, and some in their final one at school. He thanked all who had taken part in any way in presenting the play.
